Although a small overall percentage of residential carpets are wool, in the area of Florida we live they seem to be popular in some higher end homes. When cleaning wool carpets, one must be very careful not to use too aggresive of a cleaning product. High pH cleaners can damage the wool fibers.
Last week while down in Longboat Key cleaning wool carpets in a home, we tried a product by a company named Chemeisters called Pre-Action.
The product is advertised to work on Orientals, wool or wool blends, older, fragile or damaged carpets, meaning it has a low pH, not too aggressive for those fabrics needing extra care.
Due to the low pH, before using I was somewhat skeptical about how effective it would be. Especially when after inspecting the carpets there seemed to be a lot of soil on them.
The bottle said to dilute between 4-16 ounces per gallon depending on the level of soiling. I used a ratio of 8 ounces per gallon.
To my surprise, I was quite amazed with the results. I applied it as a pre-spray and let it dwell on the carpets about 15-20 minutes. Most of the spots came right up during hot water extraction, and the ones that didn't just needed a little spotting using the Chemeisters and a white cloth. It was a highly effective cleaner that was not dangerous at all to use on the wool carpets.
The wool carpets came out great and I couldn't be happier with the product. I will definately be adding it to Overturf's Cleaning arsenal and using it for future wool carpet cleaning.
